Introducing Aberdeen's Long Time Coming, also known as Fenway.

Fenway is the latest Dalmatian to join the home of Shelley Gallagher. Born July 26th 2010. He is BAER bilateral hearing and is Uu for the normal uric acid gene.

The plans are that Fenway will be a therapy dog in the future. He is already practicing his skills and will test for the therapy dog designation after he turns a year old.

Fenway's dam is Aberdeen's Deal or No Deal, "DeeDee" and his sire is Ch. Fiacre's Calling Card "Gibson". He was bred by Denise Powell.

Maks is the new kid at Rim Rock Dalmatians. He is a homozygous UU. This means he has NO copies of the hyperuricosuria mutation!

Update on Lila

Lila is now known as Champion Rim Rock's U Gotta B Kiddin'. She finished her championship rather easily on June 26, 2010 at the age of 14 months. She is BAER bilateral, CERF clear, No ISD. She is bred, owned and loved by Barb Allison. Lila donated blood at one of the DCA blood draws so she can help promote good health in Dalmatians in more ways than just passing on her gene for Normal Canine Uric Acid.

Beloved Forever

This little liver girl is known as Eugenie "Beloved Forever". She is owned by Sally McDonnell and is from a litter that Sally recently whelped. There were four pups in this litter with three having the Uu gene for normal uric acid and one uu puppy that is in a wonderful pet home. All pups tested normal for hearing on their BAER hearing test. Pictures of her littermates will be posted soon.

This is Penny, the mother of the litter. Penny also has the Uu gene for normal uric acid. She is owned by Sarah Ledgerwood.

Update on Will & Lyra

Will is now 3 years old and Lyra is 18 months. They have become inseparable.
This year Marion & Terry traveled for 4 weeks around Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana with the dogs. Both dogs wear "hydra packs". They carry their own water and doggy biscuits while hiking. Marion says they hoped that would slow them down some. No way! These are Dalmatians and it takes more than a few biscuits to slow them down. For every 6 miles that Marion and Terry hike, these guys probably do 30 at very high speed.

There were a lot of opportunities for the dogs to socialize as Marion & Terry educated the general public about the joys of owning a Low Uric Acid Dalmatian. Both dogs are excellent travelers, no whining, which is a blessing. A lot of vacationers took home photos of these two great Dalmatians. There were many cries heard of "look Mom, Dalmatians"!

Two NUA Dalmatians Spotted in New Mexico

Marion & Terry feel incredibly lucky to be owned by two beautiful and intelligent NUA Dalmatians. "Will" Encantado's Where There's a Will and "Lyra" Aberdeen's Enchanted Interlude

Will was born June 5 2007 and came to live with us when he was 11 weeks old. We quickly realized that this young man was a wonderful ambassador of the breed. There wasn't a dog, cat or person that he didn't charm with his good manners and cheerful disposition. However he heard out of one ear ( known as having Unilateral hearing) and therefore could not pass his wonderful genes on. He is leaving this job to his brother Mickie.

Will's favorite thing to do ( other than eat) is to run every day in the mountains at the back of Los Alamos and in the mountains and canyons of Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico.

Pictured at the top with Will, is a new addition to the family. Her name is Lyra and she too is a normal uric acid Dalmatian. There will be more information to come shortly about this sweet young dog.

Darling Daisy

This darling little fellow is "Jedi", Cardel's Obie Wind Kenobi. Jedi is owned by a young junior handler named Tyler . As you can see, he has taken to being a Florida boy - there is an avocado tree in his front yard and it is loaded. A few drop when the winds get blustery. Jedi likes retrieving them, and the coconuts. He rolls them around the driveway and pounces on them - quite entertaining. As you can see from the first photo, he's NOT giving this one up! Jedi was born in May of 2009 and was bred by Alice Milwid.

Ty's 5-year old owner wanted to name his dog after his favorite Star Wars character, Darth Vader. He had been the "tie-dye" puppy due to the color of his ribbon, and we called him "Ty" for nearly a year that he was with us. To go with the Tie-Dye theme, his registered name is after one of my favorite Grateful Dead songs, "Eyes of the World" because" the eyes of the world" are on these VERY special puppies! Fortunately I have 2 sons and know my Star Wars trivia, so when Gareth said he wanted to name the 1-year old dog "Darth Vader," I asked him, "What kind of ship did Darth Vader fly?" He quickly answered, "Tie Fighter!" So Ty got to keep his name, which is now "Tie." (Whew!!) This is UKC GRCH Stocklore Top Spot pictured at nearly 11 years old. Topper is a wonderful dog that can be found in most of the NUA pedigrees today. UU Selia

This is Fiacre N Aberdeen Seeing Is Believing - known to her friends as Selia (pronounced Seelia) She is one of only three Dalmatians in the world that are known to be Clear for hyperuricosuria. Clear is the scientific term for having two copies of a dominant gene. In this case the gene that controls normal breakdown of uric acid during metabolism of protein the dog's diet.

Most Dalmatians have a genetic mutation that interrupts the normal breakdown of the protein they eat. The defect results in a condition called hyperuricosuria (HU) which people also call High Uric Acid. Dalmatians with HU have two copies of the defective, gene mutation.

A Dalmatian breeder named Robert Schaible, who also happened to be a professor of medical genetics at Indiana University School of Medicine, developed a line of Dalmatians that have the normal gene. When Dalmatians with the Normal gene are bred to Dalmatians with HU some of the offspring will inherit the Normal gene and some of them will inherit the defective gene.

Pups that inherit one Normal and one defective gene and are called Carriers. They are able to metabolize protein normally but they can pass the defective gene to future offspring.

At this point in time the vast majority of Dalmatians are Affected with HU, approximately 50 Dalmatians are unaffected Carriers of the defect and three are Clear of HU. It will take decades of careful breeding before we see a significant reduction in the percentage of Dalmatians with HU. But progress is being made and each year more unaffected or Normal Uric Acid Dalmatians are born.

It is unlikely that HU will ever be completely eliminated in the Dalmatian breed because a considerable number of people whose primary interest is to producing Dalmatians that can win in the show ring feel that HU is a manageable condition and see no reason to change their breeding practices.
